June 25, 2020

Becoming a truck driver can seem daunting at first, but if you follow the steps we have outlined here, you will be on the road truckin’, makin’ money in no time! See why many join this wonderful industry and never want to get out. It is a money-making career that will have great benefits for you and your family.

Talk With a Veteran Trucker

This first step isn’t necessarily required, although it’s recommended with any career path you are thinking about getting into. Maybe you know a family member, friend, or friend of a friend who is in the industry. Reach out to them and ask them about their career in trucking, what do they love about it? What do they wish they could change? Any advice they can give a youngster looking to get into a fast-paced industry. This will help you in many ways with determining your next steps to become a trucker.

Talk with your family and friends

Having a support system when starting any new career is a great foundation to build your success. A career in trucking requires a level of commitment that will take support from family and friends. Trucking can be very rewarding but some of the requirements, like being away from home, need to be discussed with the people that matter most. There may be sacrifices and lifestyle changes necessary to becoming a truck driver. Consider and discuss these changes with your family and friends. Their feedback will help you decide if this exciting career is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Things to discuss with family and friends:

  • How long are you comfortable being away from home?
  • How much time at home do you need?
  • How will you handle missing a birthday or anniversary?
  • If there is an emergency at home, who is available to assist if you are away?
  • What benefits do you need?
  • Can your relationship thrive through phone calls and video calls?
  • Is someone available to help with meal prepping and laundry when you are home?
  • How will you manage chores like mowing the lawn?

Obtaining a CPL & CDL Licence

First things first, you must obtain a CPL (commercial learner’s permit) in order to start your journey. The requirements for a CPL are: you must be 21 years of age, have a valid driver’s license, you must pass a basic knowledge and skills test, and pay a fee. Once you have done this, you will need to have your CPL for 14 days before entertaining your CDL. The CDL regulations and fees differ by state and should be researched thoroughly before finding a truck driving school in your area. Truck driving schools also vary in cost from $4,000-$10,000, typically classes are held at local community colleges, expect training to take anywhere from 3-7 weeks, depending on the program you choose.

But don’t fret at the tuition costs, this is a career path that will put you right into making money once you complete your schooling.

Choosing Your Career Path

After you’ve completed your training and obtained all the proper licensing, you get to decide where you want to take your trucking career. When most people think of a trucking career, they think of driving long hours across the country making sure freight is delivered on time. And while that is a big part of the trucking industry, there are many more options. Many opt for local driving jobs that allow them to be home each night with their family. Other jobs offer a good in-between, regional drivers get to do some long haul trucking, but within a certain region, say, the west coast. You would be getting some longer trips within that region and still home often with your family.  All of these are great options and pay very well. A great place to start is to find a company like Super T who offer driver trainee programs. These types of programs allow drivers with a CDL and less than a year of experience to go through a six-week training to learn the requirements and skills that are imperative to becoming an over-the-road truck driver.

Becoming a truck driver is not only a career change, but you will come to realize that it is a complete lifestyle change.
